Exeter City Appoint New Senior Commercial Manager

Exeter City FC have completed their extensive nationwide search for a new Senior Commercial Manager to head up all of the club’s revenue generating activities as they continue to press ahead with the next stage of the development of their off-pitch business and commercial operations.

The Club have today announced the appointment of Pat Chambers to the role, reporting directly to Paul Morrish, Exeter City’s Commercial Director. Morrish commented: “Having conducted a full desktop appraisal of the large number of candidates from across the country who applied for the role, as an interviewing panel of three we placed Pat and three other extremely strong candidates on our interview shortlist. The Club’s interview panel comprised two Club Directors and a member of the ECFC Supporters’ Trust Board of Society. The decision to appoint Pat was unanimous and was made after each of the short-listed candidates had presented a response to a pre-prepared brief and a series of interview questions designed to ensure that we found a candidate who not only possessed the capability we require, but also shared the community and growth ethos we espouse.”

The job was advertised locally and also nationally in the specialist commercial sports press. Spreading the net to try and attract the best talent nationwide served the Club’s purpose well as a number of candidates, including the eventual appointee, came forward from this source. Pat Chambers joins Exeter City after four highly successful years as Business Development Manager for Sporting-ID where, reporting directly to the Managing Director, she held responsibility for internal and external sales, and customer service, for a business which doubled its turnover and dramatically increased its profits within twelve months. Among her key client portfolio were the Football Association, The Premier League, the Football League, the Scottish Premier League and national and international football product brands. Prior to this role Chambers held appointments reporting directly to the Board as National Sales Manger for the Johnson Service Group, and as the top national performer for nine consecutive years as a Regional Sales Manager for the Automobile Association.

Morrish continued: “In Pat we are delighted to have been able to employ someone who has made a conscious decision to take a substantial drop in salary and move to a different area of the country to be a part of our ongoing success story and continue to drive us forward. Her referees across the English and Scottish football leagues and from within The Premiership and other football bodies have all spoken extremely highly to us of Pat. The fact that she withstood the overtures of her existing employer, and thoroughly investigated the club to determine that it was the right move for her and us to come to Exeter City speaks volumes for the calibre of person we have acquired to work with our existing first class team.

The Commercial team we have in place have broken all previous club records for season ticket, sponsorship, stadium and programme advertising, and matchday catering revenues already this season and Pat’s appointment will lead us from strength to strength.”

The role of Senior Commercial Manager has been created to lead the Club’s sponsorship, matchday, conferencing, bars, retail, and commercial partnership activity. Exeter City is mid-way through its programme of change under the Club’s “V10” plan and has recently further evolved to create a series of internal profit and revenue centres, which represent the remit of this role.

Speaking about her appointment Chambers commented: “I am absolutely delighted to be joining the off the pitch team at Exeter City. Prior to applying for the role I undertook some considerable research with people I trust in the football world and each of them spoke of the sense in football that Exeter City was a club which was excellently run, with unbelievably committed supporters and sponsors, and which was now truly beginning to realise its potential. The feeling is most definitely that it is making huge progress and within sight of great things. This was born out from the point I first made contact with the Club, the people I have already met, and the passion and warmth I experienced of the fans when I went into the club bar to watch the televised match last Tuesday night. I had only packed up my house and driven down from the north east that day, but listening and watching the match at the club really underlined how right it feels for me to join the team here.”
“I have always found that the best way to deliver in a sporting business is to work with the most important people to give them what they want. Those people are our fans, our community and our commercial partners. And I look forward to getting to know as many of these as I can once I start work on Monday.”

Pat Chambers, who is also a successful competitive squash and golf player, possesses a degree in Personnel Management and is an active fundraiser and regional organiser for the SCOPE charity. Pat also possesses numerous professional sales, marketing, computing and business management qualifications and awards.
