About Red or Dead?
"It is time for those who truly love and care about
the good name of Exeter City Football Club to stand up and be
counted. They are the only ones who can restore pride and dignity
back to this wonderful club.
This is your time to show the watching community and football
throughout the country just how badly you want Exeter City to
survive. The message is a stark one. Help me NOW, or watch the
club die”
Ian Huxham, 25th October 2003.
Exeter City have revealed details of the most important fundraising
campaign in the club's 100-year history.
Named "Red or Dead?", the scheme is looking for 1,500
supporters to pledge to raise £500 each over the course
of the next 16 months. This would enable the club to repay the
£340,000 it owes to creditors under its Corporate Voluntary
Agreement (CVA), as well as the £425,000 it needs to satisfy
so-called 'football creditors'.
Accountant Jerry O'Sullivan - who is responsible for overseeing
the CVA - warned that the club would almost definitely cease to
exist if it couldn't find the money necessary to satisfy its non-football
creditors by next October.
Mindful that many City fans have already dipped into their pockets
on a number of occasions since the supporters' trust took the
helm at St James's Park last summer, and because it was vitally
important to the club that anyone who cares about Exeter City
had the opportunity to get involved in thie scheme, great effort
has been made to make it as accessible as possible.
The club is promoting a variety of methods via which supporters
can make their contribution. These include:
• A one-off payment of £500;
• By earmarking £500 in supporters' trust subscriptions
specifically for Red or Dead? between now and October 2005;
• By taking advantage of a special £500 loan scheme
facilitated by the club;
• By taking part in one or more sponsored events over the
course of the next 16 months. The club will be helping to stage
a multitude of such events, as well as co-ordinating a list of
fundraising ideas to help supporters reach their £500 target.
All the money raised by the campaign will go straight into a
ring-fenced bank account, which only CVA administrator O'Sullivan
will be able to access.
Everyone who participates in the Red or Dead? scheme will have
their names engraved on a special roll of honour which will take
pride of place at St James's Park.
The Club is now calling on everyone with a bit of Exeter City
in their heart to sign up and pledge to raise £500, and
help ensure that the football club we love survives.
As campaign manager, Trevor Gilbery, says, "the choice really
is straight-forward - Red or Dead?"
